Start at McCormack’s Bay and ride 8km of marshalled road through the Heathcote Valley and along Port Hills Road. At the intersection with Rapaki Rd turn hard left where the marshals guide the Mountain Bike riders 0.7 km up Rapaki Rd. to the first gate on the Rapaki 4WD farm track, The fastest time up this 4.3km section of track is 13 min.
At the top of the Rapaki track, marshals will guide riders across the Summit Road and onto a single track traverse track heading east towards Castle Rock. There are a few rock step ups in this approximately 1km long section. At the finish of this section, marshals will guide riders back onto the Summit Road for a 2km section of sealed road climbing to the Christchurch’s Iconic Rock Crag called Castle Rock.
At Castle Rock marshals will guide riders down on to 2km of single track with several fastdescending corners and a few rock step ups. Riders will come out to the Summit Road again at the intersection with the Bridle Path.
From the top of the Bridal Path there is a view straight down to Lyttelton and another 2km of sealed road climbing under the Gondola to the John Britton Reserve. Here the single track begins again in the John Britton Reserve for 0.25 km of easy track to the top of Mt. Pleasant Road. Followed is a quick 0.5km section along the Summit Road to the Green Wood Reserve. Green Wood Reserve sees approximately 4km of undulating single track. There are a few man made wooden structures such at ladders and bridges, which will be greasy if wet. Green Wood Reserve drops directly
down to Evans Pass with several fast descending corners. A dismount is required to hop onto the Summit Rd.
Just above Evans Pass marshals will guide riders across the Summit Rd. and onto the extension to the Captain Thomas single track at approx 2.5 km in length in total. The first 0.25 km of Captain Thomas track is not demanding, the middle section is most demanding with several rock steps up and drops, which are very exposed. For riders who misjudge these sections the fall could be serious. The extreme sections will be marked but practise on this section is essential. Once on the flat at the finish of the Captain Thomas single track riders will merge with the road event and finish by riding through the Sumner township to finish at McCormack’s Bay, after completing the causeway once more and rounding the hairpin left and back to the finish line.
Note: The road portions of this event take place entirely on public roads, and although traffic management and/or restrictions are in force at intersections and other parts of the course, competitors must at all times assume that all roads are open to traffic in both directions.
On the off road sections marshals will be in situ at recognized hazardous spots. The mandatory dismount areas will be well marked and manned. It will be the same for all riders. For those that get past the marshals without dismounting, your ID will be pulled from results and prize opportunities.
Riders should carry sufficient water, repair equipment and a spare tube.
